News in October: Personally, I joined the CEED (Centre for Entrepreneurship Education and Development) program in Nova Scotia to get some help in my effort to run a full-time business as a writing coach.
A few things I found interesting in October.
Tech: Apple introduced its new iPad and iPad mini – both with newly updated iBooks reader programs. Check out the response here http://publishingperspectives.com/2012/10/apple-unveils-4th-generation-ipad-and-ipad-mini/
General: Random House and Penguin consider a merger. If this goes through it will make for one huge publisher, and perhaps a reduction in the market. http://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/industry-news/financial-reporting/article/54511-random-house-penguin-may-merge.html
Johnny Depp gets his own imprint at Harper Collins. I am not sure what to think of that, except of course I am somewhat depressed over the obvious commercialism of using a movie star as an imprint head.
Submission: Although it is late to post this, Harper Collins’ sci-fi imprint, Voyager, opened its doors for 2 weeks to submissions. The reason this is interesting is that they will most likely have these books be released as ebooks first, or ebooks only. One wonders if all the big houses are doing this because their big authors have balked at ebook contract conditions.
